Seeing photographs of wildlife really puts a smile on my face. It’s nice to see people taking the time to document the vast and varied animals the world has to offer. Now, we’ve found somebody who does squirrel photography and I’m in love with the results.
Geert Weggen is a Dutch/Swedish international awarded photographer whose speciality is photographing red squirrels. His work has been published in newspapers, magazines, books and featured on television shows around the world. When you see his work, it’s not hard to see why.
6 years ago, there was a fox standing on his doorstep. As soon as Geert spotted the animal, he ran inside to fetch some meat. After that, the fox would come back daily to get more food which meant he could capture perfect photographs each day of his new furry friend.
By the end of the week, the fox would start interacting and playing with the various props he would lay outside for the creature. Soon after birds started coming and he built miniature set pieces, then after the birds, the red squirrels began to show.
Since his first shoot, Geert Weggen has become pretty nifty in the art of squirrel photography
After gaining a cult following, he now holds workshops for other budding photographers to try and have a dab at wildlife photography.
I have to admit, all of us in the Happiest team have become obsessed with Weggen’s work. So much so that we compiled a little list of some of our favourite images.
Let us know which ones you loved the most in the comment section below. And if you have any of your own squirrel pictures, we’d love to see them.
