Lots of little girls dream of growing up to become a prima ballerina, but not all girls grow up to be lucky enough to make it. For little Audrey Nethery, she knows she may never make it, but that doesn’t stop her from grabbing the opportunity to perform with her idols.
Audrey may look tiny, but she is actually 8 years old. Audrey suffers from a bone marrow disease called Diamond Blackfan Anemia which means that her body doesn’t produce enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the tissues in her body.
On top of this, Audrey was born with a cleft palate and a hole in her heart, so the little dancer has plenty of health issues that prevent her from living a ‘normal life’. Constantly undergoing blood transfusions and having to take steroids to combat her disease, Audrey is unlikely to make it as the dancer she dreams of becoming.
But that doesn’t hold Audrey back from sharing her singing and dancing talents with the world, which she does regularly for her 360,000 Youtube followers. So the New York City ballet decided to do something to make Audrey’s dreams come true.
One of the professional ballerinas met Audrey and her parents outside the theatre and made Audrey an offer she couldn’t refuse. They were inviting Audrey to join some of the ballerinas on stage to perform a section from Christmas classic, ‘The Nutcracker’.
Donning her very own beautiful leotard, tutu, tiara and ballet slippers, Audrey rehearsed with the ballerinas and performed a flawless routine to an adoring crowd. It is especially emotional to see her mother sobbing in the audience as she watches her daughter live her dream.
