Most people will know Jon Stewart from his educated rants on the Daily Show. But, since he left the role for Trevor Noah to take over, he has been busy. At the moment, he has taken to defending the honor of 9/11 first responders.
Congress wanted to take away the benefits for 9/11 first responders, but Jon Stewart was having none of it. He started by saying that the hearing was an “incredible metaphor.”
“Behind me, a filled room of 9/11 first responders and in front of me, a nearly empty Congress.” He continued to say that Congress’ lack of urgency to help brave first responders was a “stain”.
“Your indifference cost these men and women their most valuable commodity: time,” he said. “It’s the one thing they’re running out of.”
An emotional Stewart pleaded with Congress to top up the fund to help these brave Americans.
“Al-Qaeda didn’t shout death to Tribeca – they attacked America, and these men and women and their response to it is what brought our country back,” he said in his viral testimony. “They did their jobs with courage, grace, tenacity, humility. Eighteen years later, do yours!”
Jon Stewart was very emotional and fought back tears. But, he is using his celebrity status to help these people out, and they deserve it. Congress owes them more than this.
Thankfully, aided by Jon Stewart’s emotional plea, Congress agreed to replenish the 9/11 victim fund and help these people out. However, we just have to hope that this situation doesn’t arise again. Maybe Jon Stewart won’t be there next time? We just have to hope that people do the right thing.
