Blind, Autistic Singer Moves America To Tears With Soulful Performance

By - 30th May 2019

Music is amazing. It overcomes boundaries, it doesn’t care about race or gender or anything else. It brings us all together. And when someone can really sing, or play, or even whistle, it’s a special moment. But it was even more special for 22-year-old singer Kodi Lee.

Kodi was led onto the America’s Got Talent stage by his mom, Tina. That’s because he is blind. But neither that nor his autism stop him from playing music. His mom explained it best to the judges.

“Kodi is blind and autistic,” she said. “We found out that he loved music really early on. He listened and his eyes just went huge, and he started singing, that’s when I was in tears. I realized he’s an entertainer. Through music and performing, he was able to withstand living in this world because when you’re autistic, it’s really hard to do what everybody else does. It actually has saved his life playing music.”

That is a moving story, but the judges were ready to hear him play. Wearing just an ordinary hoodie and jeans, Kodi didn’t really look like a singer, but his funny personality was already shining through. But nobody expected what happened when he sat at the piano.

He sang “A Song For You” by Leon Russell. Somehow, despite being blind, his fingers played the beautiful melody. And he sang in the most beautiful tone, hitting every note. It’s honestly impossible to describe, so you’ll just have to listen to it in the video below.

After Kodi had finished, all four judges and everyone in the audience were on their feet. His mom joined him on stage again and told him “it’s all for you.” There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

The judges gave Kodi amazing feedback, but new judge Gabrielle Union wanted to take it a step further. If you didn’t see it live, you’ll have to watch to find out.
