We all love our pets, and most of us have a great story of when we first met them. For many of us it was at a shelter, some maybe as soon as they were born? Maybe your pet was there from when you were born, and you don’t remember life without it? Well, Sylvester Stallone has a “meeting your pet” story to beat all others.
If you haven’t seen Rocky, stop now and go and watch it. The classic boxing film launched Sylvester Stallone’s career and is revered as a cult classic. The 1976 film won three Oscars, and while most people remember the iconic training montage, many fondly remember Rocky getting two turtles.
Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone) buys the exotic pets as an attempt to woo the shy pet shop assistant. But, Stallone revealed during filming for Creed 2, a Rocky sequel, that he still has them! The turtles are obviously much bigger, but just as well-loved.
Comically named Cuff and Link, he estimates the tortoises are around 45 years old! They’ve still got a long life ahead of them. Stallone put a selfie on Instagram of the three of them together. He captioned it, “In CREED 2 with my original buddies from the first Rocky, CUFF and LINK, now about 44 years old!”
Sly also bought Butkus the Bullmastiff from the first two Rocky films. However, he was forced to sell the dog to make ends meet before Rocky came out. As soon as he received his first paycheck, he bought his beloved dog back for $15,000 (adjusted for inflation, that would now be well over $50,000). He and Butkus were together until the dog died in 1981.
What do you make of Stallone’s lifelong pets? It’s an amazing story for sure! Let us know what you think in the comments, and share with your family and friends.
