It’s always great when animals make unexpected friends. Somehow it’s cuter than, for instance, two dogs were best friends. But, this latest unexpected friendship between a golden retriever and a baby koala may just have saved the koala’s life.

The golden retriever in question is Asha, who belongs to Australian Kerry McKinnon and her husband. It was Kerry’s husband who first noticed the pair on their porch. He called his wife down, as she wasn’t even awake yet.

When Kerry came down, she must have thought she was still dreaming!

“I didn’t know what he was talking about at first,” she explained. “But then, I saw this tiny koala snuggled on top of Asha. I just burst out laughing. Poor Asha didn’t know what to think, she just kept looking at me with such a confused look. She looked a bit guilty when I came out to see what was going on. Her expression was hilarious.”

The reality is, although Asha just made a friend, she probably saved this baby koala’s life. Kerry thinks it fells from its mom’s pouch and had to fend for itself from there. Temperatures at night in Victoria can fall as low as 5C. Plus, if a predator had found the joey before lovely Asha, it wouldn’t have been nice.

“When we took the koala off to wrap it in a blanket, it hissed at me and carried on,” continued Kerry. “I think it would have been happy to have just slept there all day. It was really an amazing thing to see and so uniquely Australian”

Unfortunately, Kerry separated the new friends and took the koala to a vet and then a rehabilitation center. They hope it will be released back into the wild soon, thanks to Asha’s friendship and lifesaving actions.
