Dogs have a sixth sense, there’s no question about it. They also have incredibly heightened senses, which is why they are so good as sniffer dogs and service dogs. They can smell when something bad is about to happen, well before it does, and that is exactly how this dog saved her owner’s life.
Keola, an American Akita, proved her loyalty to her owner when she helped her pregnant owner, Alhanna, figure out what was wrong with her before it was too late. But unable to talk, it made letting her owner know that bit more difficult.
Alhanna and Ricky Butler from England were a close knit family unit with Keola, and they were expecting a new addition to their little family in the near future. The trio were very excited but concern was growing as Keola began to act weird around Alhanna.
As her pregnancy progressed, Alhanna noticed that she was getting increasing lower back pain. Doctors ignored her concerns, passing them off as the side effects of pregnancy. After all, a growing baby in your belly is surely going to cause a bit of back pain from time to time.
No one really understood how ill I was – but Keola did. She would nudge me and cry and I could never figure out why she had suddenly started doing this. Ricky said she was distraught whenever I went to work, when she had never minded before.
But Keola knew better. She began to follow Alhanna around and stare at her, sometimes nudging her and crying. She was clearly trying to communicate something, but they didn’t know what.
When the doctors sent me home and said there was nothing seriously wrong, she just sat staring at me so intently that it really scared me. I posted a picture of her doing this on Facebook and made the joke about the film Hatchi where the dog also does this and suddenly my friends all started saying I should take it seriously.
Deciding enough was enough, Alhanna decided to pay attention to her dog’s warning signs and took herself to the hospital to be checked over. Incredibly, Alhanna was rushed straight into intensive care. It turned out that her back pain was the symptom of a double kidney infection that was so far progressed that she wasn’t far from risk of death.
Alhanna’s infection was an extremely rare type that was antibiotic resistant. The bug that she had, had only affected one other person in the UK before. Because the infection had been left untreated for so long, it was one of the worst cases doctors had ever seen. If her infection had been left undiscovered for much longer, it would have taken both Alhanna and her baby’s lives.
Thankfully, Alhanna is now back to full health and has since given birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy called Lincoln. All thanks to loyal Keola saving the day!
The family know that they have a very special protector in their family with Keola and the intelligent dog not only saved the life of her beloved owner, but the life of her new best friend, baby Lincoln. What an amazing, loving pup!
