Cosmo is an adorable Saint Bernard and looks like the cuddliest fellow around, but his life has not been easy. As a puppy, Cosmo was abandoned by his breeder and sent to the Hearts United for Animals shelter. Nobody really knows why, least of all Cosmo, who seemed confused in the shelter. He maintained friendly relations with all the staff despite his stressful position and hoped every day to be taken to his forever home.

A woman named Jayne came across Cosmo’s profile on a pet adoption website and immediately fell in love. However, there was one problem. Cosmo was in  Nebraska, and she and her husband lived in upstate New York.

But that didn’t stop Jayne. She flew to Nebraska, and rented a car to drive Cosmo all the way back to New York with her! Talk about a road trip.

Jayne was initially nervous, in case she and Cosmo wouldn’t get along, or he wouldn’t like her. But she had nothing to worry about.

Jayne explained that “I don’t know if Cosmo has any understanding of what’s happening, but I think he understands there’s a human here who wants to give him some love and he’s pretty happy about it.”

Cosmo spent most of the journey resting in the back of the car, enjoying the scenery of the long drive. He seemed a little nervous sometimes but kept his calm demeanour.

Then, Cosmo arrived at his new home. He was wary of it but slowly padded around the house, exploring the new sights and smells. If it was weird, they hoped he would get used to it. He also met Jayne and her husband’s two other dogs, Poppy and Grendel, and their giant rabbit!

“It’s nice to see him on a big space, see him spread out and put his belly on a cool floor, and just know he’s finally staying in a space, a place where can feel happy and comfortable,” Jayne said.

Cosmo, a dog more used to trying to fit into spaces too small for his 130-pound frame, now has a whole house of his own, and a loving family to boot. Would you have adopted Cosmo? Let us know in the comments!
