Family head to shelter to adopt a cat, but leave with far more than they bargained for.

If you were to put a dog, a cat and a rat in a room together, most folks would bet their last dollar that chaos would be sure to follow.

Well, this very unlikely trio have been making quite the storm at the Oshkosh Area Humane Society (OAHS) in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Sasha the dog, Jack the cat and Tweaks the rat was brought to the shelter by their owner at the beginning of March.

“They had to downsize their home, and they weren’t able to take the three animals with them, so they brought them here,” said Cheryl Rosenthal, communications and education coordinator at OAHS.

When the animals arrived at OAHS, they had to get medical examinations. Jack was first, but when they took him to the examination room, his behaviour changed rapidly.

Rosenthal said, “He became very frightened and was growling and not very cooperative at all”.

One of the staff members suggested bringing in the dog. As if by magic, Jack had completely calmed down. All he wanted was his buddy with him to keep him safe.

After seeing Sasha and Jack’s strong bond, the shelter team knew they had to keep them the trio together in the same enclosure.

We put the rat down, and right away the rat was running all over the dog, and going up and licking his face, and the dog was licking the rat. So it was like, ‘OK – I guess they really are friends.

When tweaks spotted Jack sleeping, he went under his front paws and had a cuddle.

The shelter staff had dubbed the trio ‘The Rat Pack’. All the team loved watching them interact with each other. They even shared their food!

The team at OAHS were determined to get the animals rehomed together. It took three weeks to find the right person to adopt them.

That’s when Kathy Berens and her daughter walked into the shelter (and the lives of The Rat Pack).

“They had adopted a cat from us, and they were thinking about getting another cat, but they also wanted a dog,” Rosenthal said. “So Kathy kind of overheard some of our staff talking about Tweaks and Sasha and Jack, and she’s like, ‘This sounds like a ready-made family. This might be ideal for us.'”

Originally Kathy was reluctant to take Tweaks but the shelter insisted that they all came as a family.

They took Kathy to meet the rat and she was hesitant at first but when she realised how affectionate Tweaks was, she couldn’t help but fall in love with him.

Now The Rat Pack has moved to their new home in rural Wisconsin.

“They have touched a lot of hearts other than just mine and I am grateful and feel very privileged to be able to be a part of this,” said Berens.

Though the shelter staff are happy the trio has found a forever home, the team are going to miss having them around.

For all of our staff, it’s kind of bittersweet. We’ve all gotten very attached to the threesome, but we’re just very excited that they’re going home.
