Stress gets to us all. It’s a Friday evening, you’re struggling with motivation. Maybe a particularly difficult client berated you at lunchtime. But at least you’ve got the weekend to look forward to – if you can enjoy it. Perhaps what you’ve been missing all along are some cuddly cows to help you de-stress?

As weird as it sounds, it’s a known phenomenon. Based on the Dutch tradition of koe knuffelen, chilling with cows is a great way to relax. Suzanne Vullers brought the tradition to her farm in New York.

“When they chew their cud, they lay down and become really quiet, and that creates a perfect opportunity to connect with them and to be with them,” said Suzanne of Mountain Horse Farm.

Despite the name, Mountain Horse Farm has two cows, Bella and Bonnie. Several times a week they entertain visitors who can cuddle them and relax. The cows don’t seem to mind, and the visitors go away happy, so it’s a win-win!

“It makes you forget everything around you,” Suzanne continued. “You forget that you have to pay your bills or you have to have your coffee… It immerses you in that activity.”

The cuddling sessions cost $75 an hour, but we think it’s worth that just so you know the cows are safe. However, it’s not worth getting trampled by wild cattle! Suzanne says the cuddling sessions help people get to know the cows as well.

“A lot of people don’t realise that cows have personalities, that they are all unique beings,” she said. “That they have likes and dislikes, that they are funny, that they know their names.”

Bonnie and Bella were saved from a slaughterhouse and now live happily on Suzanne’s farm, where they just interact with guests when they want to. They also get all the cuddles they want!
