Bobby Humphreys is an unashamed dog lover. However, he has mostly owned big dogs his whole life. His favourite dogs are rottweilers, and he never thought he’d grow to love anything smaller. But, when a chihuahua saved his life, his whole doggy world turned upside down.
It all began when Humphreys’ marriage broke down. His wife of 17 years divorced him and he was left heartbroken. He was depressed, and even contemplated taking his own life. However, his best friend Connie stepped up to the plate and helped him out.
“She literally just wouldn’t go away no matter how much I told her to. She had lost friends to that before and wasn’t going to lose me,” Humphreys said. “My friend, Connie, had shown me what friendship really meant. No matter what I needed, she was there for me. Needless to say, I feel I owe to her quite a bit.”
However, Connie soon decided to move house and her new place wouldn’t allow pets. She asked Humphreys to look after her Chihuahua, Lady, while she found her a new owner. Humphreys said yes because, despite the fact he thought Lady didn’t really like him, Connie had really helped him when times were rough.
However, the pair immediately bonded. “[Connie] swore she’s never seen anything like this, this dog hates everybody. Lady and I have been literally inseparable ever since,” Humphreys said.
Having a canine friend to cuddle and talk to helped Humphreys even more. They were inseparable. However, eventually Connie asked for Lady back. Humphreys obviously said yes to his friend, but immediately adopted his own chihuahua. Kira was an adult rescue dog from a tough home, but Humphreys showed her how to love and trust again.
Next, he found a puppy called Harley on Petfinder. However, when he picked her up, he also took her sister Quinn because of their appalling conditions. This continued, and eventually he had 30 rescued chihuahuas and a sanctuary called Big Guy, Little World Sanctuary.
“We rescue Chihuahuas who are living horrible lives, abused, starving, disabled, mental issues, etc.” Humphreys continueed, “we give them either a forever home with us where they will never have to experience neglect or anything like that again, or we nurse them back to health and adopt them out! We just want to help as many babies as we can.”
Lady the Chihuahua saved Bobby Humphreys’ life. Since then, he has saved over 30 more chihuahuas with his sanctuary.
