Nature never fails to amaze us. Sometimes it is beautiful gardens or trees, other times it can be amazing animals. However, it’s not often that the smallest creatures are beautiful and amazing. That’s right, today we’re talking about the bugs. Actually, one bug in particular, but it’s pretty special.
Margaret Neville lives on a farm in South Africa, and she likes nothing more than taking a stroll through her surroundings. The natural life comes easy to her. However, today she noticed something unusual. As she was passing her lavender bush, she saw a bug. But it wasn’t an ugly bug, it was beautiful. At first, she couldn’t believe it was real!
“I was amazed at first sight,” she said.
“When I saw her, I thought she was an exquisite work of art,” said Kerri Martinaglia, a friend of Margaret’s.
The body of the bug almost looks like glass. But, a gorgeous swirl adorns its amazing green wings. What most people see, however, are the beautiful pink lumps. They resemble tiny pink flower buds on the legs and body of the bug.
Margaret found out that it is called a flower mantis. A species of mantis, they camoflage themselves in flowers. It’s all pretty self-explanatory, but the unexpected beauty shocked Margaret. Before putting it back in the lavender, she named her beautiful bug Miss Frilly.
“She has spent the entire month of September living on my lavender,” Margaret explained. “She is still there now.”
Recently, Miss Frilly has found a male suitor, and Margaret hopes they will bring more beauty into our world.
