Shelters do some fantastic work. They help stray dogs regardless of age or gender and give them the best care possible. They do not hold prejudices based on breed and give unrivalled love. However, all dogs want to go to a forever home before too long. One family agreed to pick up two dogs from the San Bernadino City Shelter. One was a cute young puppy and the other an ageing dog.
When they arrived, however, their actions shocked the shelter staff. They picked up the black labrador puppy no problem but decided against taking Cookie the older cocker spaniel.
Staff members watched in horror as the family betrayed Cookie in a horrible way. The ageing dog cried as her potential owners walked away without her.
One staff member said “Cookie is crying for her family. She watched as the family drove away and left her to die.”
Poor Cookie is old and ill, but the shelter is more than happy to help with the veterinary side of things. So far they have helped through surgery for cancer, and she is recovering well. They believe she is to be 8-10 years old, it’s often hard to tell with strays. But she is full of love and wants nothing more than to be loved in return.
Thankfully, the shelter has found a permanent foster home for Cookie, with a foster mother who will care for her in her old age. This is slightly different from adoption, and the shelter can offer more active help with Cookie’s needs. So it’s for the best, and Cookie has a happy home after her heartbreaking tale.
The shelter encourages people who enquire after Cookie to adopt a different dog, particularly an older dog. They are often overlooked for cuter puppies but need just as much love.
