Pets are like family in every possible way. We love them, we care for them, we watch them grow. They are a part of everyday life. And anyone who adopts an animal should be even more proud of themselves, as they have helped that pet have a second chance at a happy life.

The problem with adoption, however, is that it’s often the cute pets that get adopted first, leaving others behind. The puppies, the golden retrievers, that sort of thing. However, Colorado animal-lover Steve Grieg decided to change things up.

Steve is a big animal lover and has always had around three or four pets in his home since he was a child. But, one of his most beloved dogs sadly passed away and he wanted to do something special to commemorate him.

So, he went to his local shelter and asked for their “least adoptable” dog. “So [I adopted] a 12-year-old Chihuahua [named Eeyore],” he said. “With a heart murmur and four bad knees and I brought him home and that was just the beginning of all the animals.”

He soon went back, and went to other shelters, collecting their old and unhealthy animals. He now has 10 elderly dogs, two pigeons, and two ducks. But, his biggest surprise was Bikini the pig. A friend who wasn’t able to keep her knew that Steve adopts animals, so sent her to him.

Why does he love senior pets, though? “They’re just wiser animals,” he said. “You kind of know what you want out of life once you become a certain age. These dogs know who they are and it’s easy to develop a relationship with a person or pet who knows who they are.”

He started an Instagram for his “wolf gang” which now has over 800,000 followers. “They just make it feel like home. It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of. It makes my days worthwhile,” he explained.
