Imagine living to be 107 years old. That’s a long time on this planet. You may have seen two, or three different millennia. Tens of Presidents or Prime Ministers. The amount of technological change would be astounding.
Louise Signore was born in Harlem, New York in 1912. She moved to the Bronx when she was 14, and lived there for the next 93 years. She lived a long and happy life in New York, but according to her, there’s one secret to living that long.
“I think the secret of 107: I never got married,” Louise said. “I think that’s the secret. My sister says ‘I wish I never got married’.”
However, she also leads a very active life. “If they have exercise, I do the exercise,” she explained. “If they have dancing, I dance. I still a do a little dancing. After my lunch, I will play bingo, so I had a full day.”
At 107, her health isn’t great. Louise is legally blind, and recently battled a severe bout of pneumonia. Four years ago she survived an assault and robbery in her apartment building. Despite all of this, Louise has kept hold of her funny personality and electric wit.
But Aisha Parillon, the senior director of JASA, an organisation that runs senior centres in New York City, thinks that community has helped Louise. “I think that her connection with her neighbors in the community and also her friends here at the senior center help to keep her going.”
Whatever her secret is, friends, exercise, or an aversion to marriage, Louise lived an incredible life! However, it could just be down to genetics, as her sister turned 102 this year.
